The zip file contains the base PyWright content files along with a PyWright.exe to run the game. There is no installer, and the engine will want to write to it’s folder structure while running, so it is best to place the folder somewhere other than Program Files, for instance, “c:\dev\PyWright\”. It has been known to work on operating systems ranging from Windows 98 to Windows 7.


You may need to install the Visual C++ 2008 redistributable package for it to work. If you get an error such as “This is not a valid windows application” when you try and run pywright.exe, try that. You may be able to find it at this link: Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 sp1 download

Mac OSX 26mb

The Mac OSX version comes in a .app bundle. Double clicking the zip should automatically put the PyWright folder on your desktop. Move it wherever you please. Double clicking the .app inside that folder will run the engine. This version should be able to do everything the other versions can, except for load .gif animations – you shouldn’t use .gif files anyway. This version is not as well supported as Windows because I don’t own any Macintosh machines – all of my testing is done virtually, and rarely. Thanks to RandomJibberish for making this possible.

Android 62mb

The zip file contains an apk file which you can transfer and run on your android device. Takes a while to load at first while extracting files. Also, to avoid data charges, please connect to wifi while downloading PyWright games. Currently only supports viewing games in ds style dual screen view, which can limit the screen size on some devices. More advanced (but mostly unused) special effects, such as color tinting or 3d rendering are not yet available.

This is the actual source code for the engine, written in the python programming language. You can access more recent, in development, code from, but the code here is stable and matches the stable windows and mac releases.

To run the game, you will need many python dependencies.

  • python 2.4/2.5/2.6 (will not work with python 3.0, I used to develop mainly with 2.5, but recently I have switched to python 2.6)
  • Pygame – 1.9+
  • NumPy

With the above packages installed, either in your favorite linux packaging manager, or downloading the various installers for windows or mac python, extract the zip file somewhere and run “python” to get it going.
